Last time, we opened a small window into Genesis, to admire God’s greatness in creating the stars, the earth and the stunning complexity of you.
Today, we’re going further! Come with me as we explore what existed before the beginning. Let’s step into our imaginary time machine, set the dial to just-before-Genesis 1:1. Off we go!
Before “In The Beginning”, What Was?
Before time, space and matter (the 3 fundamental elements of our universe), there was already Someone: God in the spirit realm. This realm is not a fantasy or a metaphor. It is a real dimension of existence.
Let me just clarify that this post isn’t about proving the spirit realm exists, which you probably already know. It is about heightening your awareness of it.

According to John 4:24 God is Spirit and the realm He dwells in is also spiritual and eternal. Unfortunately, this is where our time machine fails. Because this technology runs in our physical timeline and the spirit realm exists outside of time.
Titus 1:2 NKJV
[1] Paul, a bondservant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect and the acknowledgment of the truth which accords with godliness, [2] in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began,
So we humbly exit our time machine. This journey doesn’t need technology, it requires spiritual revelation. Let the Spirit and The Word of God lead us beyond time and into eternity!
Step Into Eternity
Who Lives There
The spirit realm is a reality where both good and evil spirits exist. It is populated, not by chaos but by order. There are angels, demons, satan, human spirits and of course God Himself who reigns supreme. (See Hebrews 1:14; Matthew 12:43-45; Ephesians 2:6; Ephesians 6:12).
Colossians 1:16-17
[16] For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. [17] And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.
This verse is so revelatory. It teaches us that the spirit realm is a structured, spiritual civilization with hierarchy, purpose and movement.
Places
The Bible uses several terms to describe different spiritual locations or spaces : heavenly places, heavenlies, the third heaven, the invisible, the unseen, the heaven of heavens, the throne room, the new Jerusalem, the court of heaven, in the spirit, the kingdom of God, Abraham’s bosom, Heaven (God’s throne), Hades, Sheol, the lake of fire, the bottomless pit.
Many of these are in plural form, such as “places”, “heavens” implying there are more than one. You can imagine how vast this realm is! It isn’t just one spot, it is an expanse!
Where Is The Spirit Realm?
Among the many questions I have asked God on this topic are:
Does the spirit realm have a location with coordinates?
Is it there somewhere? Or is it here with us?
This is what I found in the Bible:
It is here
In 2 Kings 6, Elisha’s servant panicked when surrounded by enemy soldiers. Then Elisha prayed “Lord open his eyes” and the young man saw the mountain full of God’s spiritual reinforcement.
2 Kings 6:17 NKJV
And Elisha prayed, ... And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
Let’s look at another example. In Numbers 22:23 Balaam had a donkey whose eyes were opened and it saw the Angel of the Lord on the road. Again, the Angel was already there, though Balaam’s natural eyes couldn’t perceive Him.
These are powerful examples showing how the spirit realm coexists with our world. I can say it operates in the same space but unseen unless revealed.
It is there
The Bible also teaches us that at times, people are taken into this realm.
In Revelation, John was in the spirit and saw the throne in heaven. He wasn’t just shown visions in his current surroundings like Elisha’s servant or Balaam’s donkey. He heard, saw, and even interacted in a realm far removed from the natural world.
Revelation 4:2 NKJV
[2] Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne.
Ezekiel’s vision is another example. He was lifted and transported by the Spirit. He wasn’t just shown a vision where where he stood physically but was repositioned so he was fully aware and immersed into another spiritual location.
Ezekiel 8:3 NKJV
[3] He stretched out the form of a hand, and took me by a lock of my hair; and the Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven, and brought me in visions of God ...
From these Biblical examples, we see that sometimes the spirit realm reveals itself here, other times we are brought there. But either way, it’s real, and it is close.
You Exist Outside Of Time
Let me close with this: We are seated with Christ in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6-7). You’re already part of this realm, whether you’ve seen it or not.
