In a previous post, we reflected on God’s extraordinary love for a tiny blue dot, our Earth. Today, we lift our eyes higher to explore the heavens, the vast cosmic expanse where stars and other planets exist, the space that reflects the glory of its Creator.
Genesis 1:1 NKJV
[1] In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
The word Heavens comes from the hebrew word שָׁמַיִם (šāmayim) which can mean : sky, visible heaven, the atmosphere, abode of the stars, but also as the abode of God.
Genesis, In The Beginning
Outer space is generally described as silent, but that silence holds a secret: the divine voice that called it into existence. So no, space isn’t truly silent; it’s proclaiming something: the majesty of God.
In this post, we’ll hop on our imaginary spacecraft, journey through galaxies, stars, and land safely with cosmic questions. I promise at every step, you’ll meet God, the voice in the silence.
As a math girl, I can’t help but share some mindblowing numbers that reveal just how brilliantly God's intelligence shaped our world.
The Sun And The Stars
Genesis 1:16 NKJV
[16] Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also.
On the fourth day of creation, God made the stars. It’s a short yet powerful statement, filled with countless layers of meaning.
Did you know:
Our galaxy, the Milky Way, has approximately 100 billion stars (100,000,000,000).
The observable universe is estimated to have between 200 billion (200,000,000,000) and 2 trillion (2,000,000,000,000) galaxies, each with billions of stars. How many stars are there? Try and do the math!
These numbers are approximates based on our current technologies. But I wonder what lies beyond the observable universe? How much more is out there, unseen?
Psalm 147:4 NKJV
[4] He counts the number of the stars;
He calls them all by name.
Imagine trying to count every star and yet, God knows each by name. The same God who names the stars knows your name and cares deeply about your life.
The Size Of The Sun

Our Sun is the only star in our solar system. So when you look at the stars in the night sky, you are seeing stars that are outside of our solar system, years away.
Our sun is so much larger than Earth
It is about 93 million miles (150 million kilometres) from Earth.
Its mass is approximately 332,900 times greater than Earth’s.
It will take approximately 1 million Earths to fill the volume of the sun. Source: Sun Fact
Now let’s look at this massive sun compared to other stars.

In the image above the sun is the furthest to the left, it’s size compared to other stars is pretty tiny. At this scale, Earth is smaller than a grain of sand. Incredible! Still, God chose it as the place where His love would be revealed!
So, How Big Is The Universe, Really
In 1929, Astronomer Edwin Hubble provided the first evidence that the universe is expanding in all directions. So how big is the Universe? Bigger than it was, and it keeps getting bigger. As far as science is concerned, the universe has no known end (it is infinite). But is it? If that doesn’t leave you in awe, pause here for a moment and reflect:
If the universe is this vast, how much greater is the God who created it?
If the universe is finite? What exists beyond it?
If the stars are countless, how much more countless are God's thoughts toward you?
Psalms 19:1 NKJV
[1] The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.
Next time you look up at the night sky, remember this: it’s easy to feel small. But even among billions of stars, you are deeply known and eternally cherished by the God who made them all.
Beautiful! ❤️
